Course Title

Transformative Justice and Young People

Department(s)

Description

In this course we will explore both theories and practices of transformative/restorative justice as it deals with youth populations. As a starting point, we will identify some of the underpinning theories, ideologies, frameworks and practices necessary for ceding the work of creating transformational change in youth development spaces. We will examine the foundation of juvenile justice systems both here in the United States and abroad and begin to understand and develop questions around shortcomings and successful restorative practices and models. In this process, as we pull apart the juvenile justice system and better understand what it means to enact a praxis of transformative justice for young people, we will investigate: over-policing, policing in schools, as well as social inequities such as racism, disability, gender and sexuality, and poverty. Students will explore what makes young people feel safe in their communities, what repairs harm, and what accountability means to those most impacted. Students will gain skills, knowledge and competencies related to healing-centered approaches, conducting restorative circles and violence prevention and interruption grounded in a youth development approach. By the end of the semester, students will have gained an increased cultural awareness while developing their own advocacy and informed processes for best practices aimed at young people in schools, juvenile justice facilities and across their communities.Through critical dialogue, experiential activities and engagement with current texts and materials, students will unpack the theoretical concepts of critical consciousness and critical theory (including introductions to cultural responsiveness and restorative justice). Students will reflect upon and analyze their own pedagogical practices to consider how these concepts impact the culture and climate of their youth development spaces. Students will also Identify shifts in personal mindsets, instructional/pedagogical practices and program policies and procedures to move toward becoming safer, more just and inclusive for young people and all members of their respective communities.
