Description

This course builds upon basic health assessment skills and provides the learner with the theoretical and clinical reasoning basis for assessment and diagnostic reasoning in advanced nursing practice across the lifespan. Emphasis is on the acquisition and analysis of relevant data for development of a comprehensive and holistic assessment. Concepts, theories and research on human development, anticipatory guidance, prevention and early detection of risk factors and disease are emphasized. Critical thinking, diagnostic reasoning and communication skills are developed through practice with case guided vignettes and simulated practice experiences. Assessment of functional and mental health status will be addressed. An overview of population care management, inclusive of socioeconomic and cultural determinants of health outcomes as well as examination of evidenced based strategies within the context of advanced practice will be provided. Prerequisite: An undergraduate health assessment course.
